The Green New Deal fell at the first hurdle Tuesday as the Senate failed to reach the 60 votes necessary to begin debate on the non-binding resolution, with 42 Democrats and Sen.

Lee said that he was also inspired to deliver the speech because of how some Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), said that Americans should stop having kids to combat climate change.

The Green New Deal is a loose set of ambitious goals outlined in a nonbinding resolution that calls for a global goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 - but no policy specifics on how to get there.

The Hill notes that "Every Democratic senator running for the party's [presidential] nomination in 2020 has co-sponsored the Senate Green New Deal resolution".

By "basically outlawing the only sources of energy that working-class and middle-class families can actually afford", the Green New Deal would "kill off entire domestic industries" and eliminate millions of jobs, McConnell said.

The proposals include guaranteeing a job at a living wage, with paid family and medical leave, vacation time and retirement security, health care for all, access to higher education and repairing or replacing aging roads, bridges and sewer systems.

All 53 Republicans oppose the Green New Deal.

Lee added that the picture was about "overcoming communism in the 20th century as the Green New Deal has to do with overcoming climate change in the 21st". He said he was treating it "with the seriousness it deserves".

Democratic Sen. Ed Markey of MA, the principle sponsor of the legislation in the Senate, called McConnell's move a 'sham'. "That's why I voted against the resolution today", said Manchin, the ranking member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Mike Lee on Tuesday took to the Senate floor with a poster of President Ronald Reagan riding a dinosaur while firing a machine gun.

After an awkward few months spent halfheartedly trying to rebrand himself as a progressive, 2020 presidential hopeful John Hickenlooper seems to be once again embracing his identity as a moderate - starting with two of the issues that dogged him throughout his two terms as Colorado's governor: fossil fuels and climate change. "Then we can get serious about taking action to tackle the climate crisis at the scale of the problem", she said in a written statement after the vote. "Mocking it is shameful".

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., speaks to reporters on Capitol Hill on Tuesday. Our jobs aren't for campaigning, & that's exactly what these bluff-votes are for, ' she wrote on Twitter on Friday. Kirsten Gillibrand said, joining with Markey and other supporters. "No one is getting an A+ on this climate test just for admitting that the climate crisis is happening". "I've never seen a bill sponsored by a dozen people who don't want to vote on it", he said.

Conservatives have rallied around an analysis by the right-leaning American Action Forum that estimates the Green New Deal would cost between $51 trillion and $93 trillion over a 10-year period.
