U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told a Christian broadcast network that it's "possible" that President Donald Trump is like Queen Esther, who saved Jews in the Old Testament.

In response to being asked if Trump was the saviour for the Jewish people against Iran, Mr Pompeo responded: "As a Christian I certainly believe that's possible".

"I am confident that the Lord is at work here", Pompeo added.

On Thursday, President Donald Trump abruptly declared the US will recognize Israel's sovereignty over the disputed Golan Heights, a major shift in American policy that gives Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a political boost a month before what is expected to be a close election.

Before his question, Mitchell reminded Pompeo that the story of Esther's triumph is the basis for the celebration of Purim, a holiday which commemorates the saving of the Jewish people.

"To be there with the Israeli prime minister and ambassador from the United States to Israel was really an important moment", Pompeo said, reported CBN. Trump has backed new sanctions on Iran aimed at reducing its ability to threaten Israel. "At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights", Netanyahu tweeted.

The global community does not recognize Israel's annexation of East Jerusalem, including the Old City, and so visiting foreign dignitaries generally refrain from going there in the company of Israeli officials. Mr Pompeo lauded the president while also praising the work the USA has done for Israel.

Pompeo was referencing in part the Trump administration's deeply controversial recognition of Jerusalem as the permanent capital of Israel past year, and related decision to relocate the United States embassy from Tel Aviv. Trump has recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and moved the U.S. Embassy there from Tel Aviv, prompting the Palestinians to sever ties with the administration.

In light of the nutso "Esther" quote, here's your daily reminder that Mike Pompeo, our SECRETARY OF STATE, said "We will continue to fight these battles, it is a never ending struggle... until the Rapture".

This is not the first time the Trump Administration has tried to pin a divine endorsement on Trump, with Press Secretary Sarah Sanders previously saying that God is the one who wanted Trump to be president in the first place.
