The Missouri River has already set records with historic flood marks measured in 30 places in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota, Kansas City forecaster Kevin Lao said.

Across the river, about 1,200 residents of the Kansas town of Elwood were urged to leave.

The downstream flow, breaking flood stage records at several locations along the river, has placed enormous strain on the region's system of flood-control levees. Miles of farmland and wooded areas along both banks were inundated in murky brown water.

Missouri officials have not yet said how much flooding has likely the cost the state.

And that's exactly what's been happening in Nebraska, where flood-protection infrastructure has been utterly overwhelmed by record-setting water levels.

Minor Flooding: Minimal or no property damage, but possibly some public threat (e.g., inundation of roads).

Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport, situated on a river bend behind a tall levee in the heart of Kansas City, Missouri, expected no flood-related disruptions, an airport official said. When the ground is this saturated, there's nowhere for water to go but into streams and rivers, taking precious topsoil with it and carving lasting changes into the land.

"There's a sense from the National Weather Service that we should expect it to continue to happen into May", Brinton said. Over the past hundred years, we've built levees to transform free-flowing rivers into pathways for shipping and commerce - straightening their routes to allow for easier and more predictable navigation.

The municipal water service issued an advisory on Saturday warning that the flooding had impaired its treatment of water, which it gets from the river, raising health risks for infants, the elderly and others with compromised immune systems.

Missouri River flooding was triggered by last week's "bomb cyclone" storm, which killed at least four people in Nebraska and Iowa, left a man missing below Nebraska's collapsed Spencer Dam, and inflicted an estimated $1.5bn in damages in Nebraska.

The engorged river crested higher at a record level of over 32 feet (9.75 meters) on Friday at the waterfront city of St. Joseph, Missouri, forcing some 7,500 people to flee from low-lying areas. "It's a hard decision to pull the trigger on an evacuation but when it's time, it's time", Mary Robertson, the city's communications manager, said.
