Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg nominated for Norway's Nobel Peace Prize

The movement began several months ago by Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old climate change activist from Sweden who began cutting class every Friday to protest outside of Sweden's parliament until its lawmakers agree to the Paris Climate Accords.

The world's youth were inspired by Thunberg's solo protest back in August.

In Utah County, students from Mountain View, Timpview, Timpanogos, Orem and Skyridge high schools plan to host a Youth Climate Strike on the steps of the Provo Historic Courthouse Friday.

"For those of us who are on the spectrum nearly everything is black and white", she added. We hope you'll join us. "We are striking because our world leaders have yet to acknowledge, prioritize or properly address our climate crisis". "Action. When do we want it. Now". But then the U.N.'s IPCC report came out past year [and] it pushed me even further to take action. As voters, we will show we care about climate change.

Throughout the day, the Guardian will highlight the voices of young people from the United States and around the world who have never never known a world where the climate isn't rapidly heating.

In the Indian Ocean island nation of Mauritius, students circulated a petition to be submitted to the government demanding concrete measures to tackle climate change.

Organizer of the Victoria event, Antonia Paquin, 21, a second-year student at the University of Victoria, said she is taking the issue personally, since climate change will affect her directly - not just her children or grandchildren. By that count, we're now down to 11 years. I don't want people to die because of a thing that could have been stopped if people had taken it more seriously. I think it is something we might be able to fix, but we would have to work really hard in the next few years.

Supporting the kids: The 62-year-old wrote on Instagram: "You know the world has changed coz (sic) we caught a train to join #ClimateStrike with the school kids, they were amazing".

People could drive less, fly less, eat less meat, use less disposable stuff and use renewable energy more, and then we could burn less fossil fuel and reduce our carbon emissions.

What started out as a gathering outside Plymouth's Civic Centre turned into a protest through the streets when more than 100 students were told they were on private property.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron have publicly welcomed the student protests, even as their policies have been criticized as too limited by environmental activists.

"I have a younger sister in junior high, and my mom has organized to bring my sister and a couple of her classmates down to the clock tower", says organizer Ivan Andreou. And why should I be studying for a future that will soon be no more, when no one is doing anything whatsoever to save the future.
