"Tonight it worked well so I think it was a good match for me", said Federer, who like Djokovic is a five-time victor at Indian Wells.

Spain's Muguruza, a two-time Grand Slam champion now ranked 20th in the world, out-lasted seventh-ranked Kiki Bertens 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 while Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam victor, beat Germany's Mona Barthel 6-4, 6-4.

Kohlschreiber will face France's Gael Monfils for a place in the quarter-finals. The match was resumed from 1-0 in the first after rain Sunday night.

He said: "Whatever the problems were with Djokovic, whether he is less than 100 per-cent medically or whether the off-court politics have got to him - who knows, Kohlschreiber has beaten him".

World No.1 Djokovic fell in straight sets in what was his first tournament since lifting a record seventh Australian Open title in January. "We communicate well, so I think that's a really big plus".

"I really wasn't focusing so much on her".

American John Isner never faced a break point during his comfortable 6-3 6-4 win over Guido Pella. "But it's everything I could do today".

World number two Nadal stayed on track to improve that number as he swept past Argentine Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-1 to reach the last 16. "I would say after 3-all in the first set I felt like getting closer to the set, holding my service games, which is not easy against Novak, because he's such a great returner", Kohlschreiber said.

The bottom half of the men's draw still includes No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal and fourth-seeded Roger Federer, both of whom breezed to victory.

Coming into the match, Kohlschreiber had only beaten Djokovic once in his nine matches against each other.

On Tuesday, the 23rd-ranked Bencic served and returned better.

Nadal, a three-time victor of the Indian Wells title, next faces Serbian qualifier Filip Krajinovic, who ousted 14th-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-2.

While Federer and Nadal have voted against having Chris Kermode as ATP Chairman, Player's Council President Djokovic has backed Kermode.

Naomi Osaka, top seed of the women's singles, also suffered an unexpected defeat, falling to Switzerland's Belinda Bencic 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth round. "For me, the plan worked".

Vondrousova, who beat 2018 runner-up Daria Kasatkina and former French Open victor Jelena Ostapenko on the way to the fourth round, will go for another big win when she faces sixth-seeded Elina Svitolina, who battled to a 7-6 (10/8), 5-7, 6-4 victory over Australian Ashleigh Barty.

Second seed Simona Halep joined the top seeds crashing out after losing 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to unseeded Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic in one hour and 40 minutes.
