Many dead in New Zealand mosque shooting, witness says

New Zealand police were hunting "an active shooter" in the center of Christchurch city on Friday after a gunman opened fire at a mosque inflicting several casualties.

A serious and evolving situation is occurring in Christchurch with an active shooter.Police are responding with its full capability to manage the situation, but the risk environment remains extremely high.Police recommend that residents across Christchurch remain off the streets and indoors until further notice.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush said in a statement that "all Christchurch schools have been placed into lockdown".

"I saw some people drop dead and some people were running away", he said.

The incident is said to have taken place at the Al Noor mosque, located in central Christchurch along Dean Avenue facing Hagley Park.

A witness has said that the shooter was dressed in military gear and had a high-powered rifle.

Several hundred people were inside and witnesses reported seeing at least four people on the ground and "blood everywhere", according to Radio New Zealand.

The NZ Herald reported that shots were fired at a mosque close to Hagley Park in the city's central area.

Bangladesh and New Zealand are scheduled to begin the third and final Test at Hagley Oval on Saturday.

Armed police have been deployed after receiving reports of shots fired in the city center at 1:40 p.m. Friday local time.

Bangladesh have been touring New Zealand since last month.

"It was very traumatic there and people were running out from that mosque presumably, and the Bangladesh players were coming out". I'm speaking from experience, I'm speaking from what I've heard.
