Odell Beckham Jr was 'a little surprised' by trade to Browns

It's been a rough start to the new league year for the Giants, who have a lot of work to do.

Odell Beckham Jr. made it clear early that he was a bit of a different guy.

With the addition of Beckham, the Browns are now considered to be one of the most exciting young teams in the NFL. Landon Collins has also headed to the division rival Washington Redskins in free agency, with Peppers now as the obvious replacement (and downgrade) at free safety.

On Tuesday night, Giants general manager Dave Gettleman traded Beckham to the Cleveland Browns for the 17th overall pick in next month's draft, a third-round pick and safety Jabrill Peppers, who played his high school ball about a dozen miles from MetLife Stadium. This is about them trading arguably their best offensive player in the prime of his career.

Beckham has missed 16 games over the last two seasons, but he was still very productive in 12 games last season (77 catches for 1,052 yards, six touchdowns).

Why would they trade their star player in the first place, let alone in his prime when they ideally want to compete for a playoff spot and are building the roster to do so? After Beckham's trade to the Browns, Gilmore will still have to cover Beckham in 2019 - it's just that Baker Mayfield, not Eli Manning, will be throwing the ball. Obviously the Giants weren't going to send him to a division rival. "As we continue to build this team, you need draft pick capital".

But the Beckham trade removes all doubt.
