She answered "yes" to several questions from the federal magistrate, including whether she understood the charges against her. Singer pleaded guilty Tuesday, and his lawyer, Donald Heller, said his client intends to cooperate fully with prosecutors and is "remorseful and contrite and wants to move on with his life".

Huffman and Giannulli are scheduled to reappear in court March 29 in Boston.

The parents paid bribes for administrators to doctor their kids' admissions exams and paid coaches to recruit students as athletes even if they did not end up playing sports in college, Lelling said.

"This case is about the widening corruption of elite college admissions through the steady application of wealth combined with fraud", Lelling said.

Some 33 parents were charged, as well as 13 coaches and associates of Singer's business.

Unnamed sources cited in its report said Huffman, who appeared on "Desperate Housewives", knew she was going to be arrested.

Huffman posted a $250,000 bond after an appearance in federal court in Los Angeles.

Another parent charged in the scheme, Manuel Henriquez, resigned as chief executive officer of the finance company Hercules Capital, the company said early on Wednesday.

The Fuller House star is among dozens charged in an alleged college admissions cheating scam involving elite colleges and universities including Yale, Georgetown, the University of Southern California and Stanford.

Rudy Meredith, who was the Yale women's soccer coach for 24 years, is accused of receiving $400,000 to accept a recruit despite knowing she did not play competitive soccer.

It was unclear how many children benefited from the scheme, though investigators said more parents and coaches may yet be charged.

Many colleges are taking action. She is facing a felony charge for conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud.

Authorities say the coaches accepted bribes in exchange for admitting students as athletes, regardless of their ability. The IRS is also investigating, since some parents allegedly disguised the bribes as charitable donations.

Prosecutors said it was up to the universities to decide what to do with students admitted through cheating.

"Singer worked with parents to fabricate impressive athletic profiles for their kids including fake athletic credentials or honors or fake participation in elite club themes", the Federal Bureau of Investigation said Tuesday.
