Hours after Vanity Fair published its fawning cover story, O'Rourke confirmed to KTSM in Texas that he would announce on Thursday that he is running for president.

He calls the 2020 presidential election "the fight of our lives as Americans, and as humans, I'd argue" in the article, adding that he wants "to do everything I humanly can for this country at this moment".

O'Rourke, who captured national attention in his ultimately unsuccessful bid to unseat U.S. Sen.

O'Rourke becomes the 15th Democrat to enter the race to decide who will take on Trump in the general election.
