Pre-Registration begins for Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

"As you step outside and explore the world, the Map will reveal Traces of magic, highlighting the location of magical Foundables", Niantic said in a blog post today, noting that certain Foundables are more likely to appear in places like banks, college campuses, monuments, or zoos. VG24/7 also notes that players can switch between Professions at any time. In the meantime, let us know in the comments if you're excited to enter the wizarding world of Harry Potter with this new title.

Every Foundable that's successfully fought for and collected gets added to a player's Registry, with the main object of the game being to pack your Registry as full as you can. Hopefully, the studios are saving the best to last, with Harry Potter: Wizards Unite coming to iOS and Android mobile devices in 2019.

The announcement also has a number of gameplay GIFs, so you can kinda see what Niantic is getting at. Wizarding Challenges are described as "real-time multiplayer battles against risky foes, including Death Eaters and soul-sucking Dementors".

The main aim will be neutralising "foundables" that appear around the world with the spells you have at your disposal. It draws both from the Harry Potter films and books, and the Fantastic Beasts additions. The developer - and Warner - will be hoping for similar success with Wizards Unite, which is based on another childhood favourite of the millennial generation.

Does Wizards Unite bring any new AR experiences?

Whale nearly eats diver off South Africa coast
Bryde's whales are close relatives of humpbacks and blue whales, and have been documented growing to over 15 metres in length. "It gives me a connection to the whale which I don't think anyone else has had", Schimpf added, in quite an understatement.

It will use the same Global Positioning System and AR abilities as Pokemon GO, but players will also be able to access Portkeys in the AR world that will transport them to a completely virtual one. Olivander's wand shop and Dumbledore's office were examples given by IGN and TechCrunch.

Niantic has told IGN that HP: WU will have an option to play without the augmented reality. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is expected to drop later this year.

I guess we'll find out more when the game comes out. One Complication gameplay example by Niantic showed a young Harry in need of saving from a Dementor, while Ron was trapped by a giant spider on roller skates.

This game will be free to play, right?

The teaser video Niantic released (below) doesn't give a lot of info, but the page set up breaks down how the game is expected to work.
