Turkish Airlines Flight 1 hit the turbulence about 45 minutes before landing at JFK, Coleman said.

Dozens of passengers on a flight bound for John F. Kennedy International Airport were injured during a severe bout of turbulence Saturday evening, officials tell CBS2. The rest were treated inside the terminal. Most suffered minor injuries, including bumps, bruises and cuts.

Spokesman Steve Coleman of the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey said 28 people were taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Centre after the plane touched down at 5.35pm local time (10.35pm GMT) on Saturday. "Then I see people start flying on the plane".

The 10 passengers sent to a local hospital included a child and one with a possible broken leg, he said.

Passenger Amir Mehrbakhsh said he saw one man frantically screaming.

Lakers' Ball shut down for rest of season
The Lakers (30-35) are in 10th place in the Western Conference heading into their rivalry meeting with Boston on Saturday night. Ingram has missed the Lakers' past two games after he reported shoulder pain following a morning shootaround last Monday.

The Port Authority spokesman said other airport operations were not affected.

According to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the city's Office of Emergency Management (OEM), the Boeing 777 was en route to NY from Istanbul when the aircraft encountered mid-air turbulence.

All of the injures were considered non-life-threatening according to the FDNY.

It was the second incident at a major New York-area airport on Saturday.
