Perhaps worst of all, he was cheered by numerous Brum fans, while he blew kisses into the crowd.

West Midlands Police confirmed during the game that a man had been arrested and was being taken to a custody block following the attack, while Birmingham apologised to the player and their opponents.

"The frightening part about this is he could have had a weapon and done serious damage!" he said.

Grealish stayed on the pitch to score the winning goal.

His strike was the flawless retribution for the attack he'd suffered earlier in the game, and Manchester City star Sterling tweeted his approval for the Villa man's match-winning finish, posting: "Karma at its best".

Birmingham released a statement after the game, in which they condemned the behaviour of their supporter and offered their full apologies to Grealish and Villa.

"While this incident falls within the remit of the Football Association, we will work with all the relevant parties to address the issue of player and match officials' safety on the pitch and ensure the appropriate action is taken".

The club continued: "What happened has no place in football or society".

A spokesperson for the English Football League (EFL) said: "The EFL condemns the mindless actions of the individual who encroached on to the pitch at St. Andrews on Sunday afternoon". [Grealish is] a lucky man, it could have been anything.

'I was just unaware of it (the incident) at the time, I think we had a throw-in in the corner.

"I just tried to get on with my job really and I think I did". But I just tried to get on with my job in the end and I think I did, scored the victor and we've come away with three points.
