Boeing 737 from Addis to Nairobi crashes with 157 aboard

A statement said: "Following the Ethiopian Airlines crash, we can confirm at least seven British nationals were on board flight ET302".

The Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed on Sunday - killing everyone on board - had been piloted only hours before from Johannesburg to Addis Ababa, the airline disclosed.

The plane lost contact with the control tower six minutes after takeoff.

Flight ET 302 crashed near the town of Bishoftu, 62 kilometres southeast of the capital Addis Ababa, the airline said, adding that the plane was a Boeing 737 MAX8.

Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier expressed his condolences and said the foreign ministry had been working to ascertain whether there were any Israeli victims.

Ethiopian Airlines is the continent's largest airline in terms of destinations and passengers served. The single-aisle Boeing 737 MAX is one of the world's newest and most advanced commercial passenger jets.

The Lion Air Crash which killed all 189 people on board, is Indonesia's second-worst air disaster, after the 1997 Garuda Indonesia crash near Medan, which killed 234 people.

Ethiopian Airlines said it received the plane, described as "brand new", in November.

An aviation expert who is also an official at the Indonesian Ombudsman, Alvin Lie, demanded that the Indonesian government ground all Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft that were still operating for Indonesian airlines following a fatal crash of an Ethiopian Airlines flight on Sunday (March 10).

Mr Macharia said during a press conference today: "The primary source of information are the authorities in Ethiopia and the Ethiopian Airlines".

"My prayers go to all the families and associates of those on board", Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta said, as many Kenyans braced for the worst. However, the statement gave no further details and the cause of the mishap is unknown at the moment.

Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed offered condolences to families of the deceased. The airline has not issued a statement.

"The group CEO who is at the accident scene right now regrets to confirm that there are no survivors", the Ethiopian Airlines Twitter account said.
