Berliners get day off for Women's Day

Berlin is the only state in the country to recognise Frauentag (Women's Day) as a public holiday, but older Berliners may remember that eastern districts used to hold official festivities every year until 1990.

In 1911, Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland celebrated the first official International Women's Day on March 19.

International Women's Day (IWD) is observed globally including Pakistan on Friday to honor achievements of women in various fields of life and renewed commitment to empower them, ARY News reported.

According to the United Nations, International Women's Day started in America in 1909, when the Socialist Party of America took to the streets to honor garment workers who had protested against inhumane working conditions the year before. It was only in 1977, when March 8 was proclaimed as the International Women's Day. Women demanded the right to vote, right to work, vocational training and the end of discrimination in the workplace. We have to make sure that social professions are valued.
