The leading astronomers have confirmed that this year February's full moon is going to be a "snow moon" as well as the 'supermoon.' They even went on to say that this is going to be this year's biggest moon.

The phenomenon occurs when a full moon, on its oval-shaped orbit, is at its closest point to Earth.

Viewers from across the region have been sending us their photos.

Tuesday's night supermoon is the closest it will get to the Earth's orbit this year - approximately 360,000km.

The full moon falls roughly once a month, and can vary in size and brightness (PA Wire)What will the moon look like? So the moon wasn't actually further away when it was right above you, but it definitely looked a lot more like a super moon if you managed to pull out your phone to snap a pic just as it was rising into the sky.

A Worm Moon is simply a term for a Full Moon that lands in March.

While the full moon technically peaked at 10:53 a.m. U.S. Eastern Time today, the optimal time to see it will be between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. local.

The March full moon also gives us the first of four full moons in one season (between the March equinox and June solstice), and because these astronomical seasons only usually deliver three full moons, the fourth in a season is dubbed a "Blue" moon.

"That's when you get to see it coming on the horizon and the visual effects of it appearing to be bigger look the best", he said.

Nevertheless, last night was a treat for those who trained their scopes on sky-ward.
