A crow sits atop the deer sculpture by Ludwig Habich on the roof of the art house in Stuttgart, Germany, in front of the nearly full moon, on February 18, 2019.

In general the supermoon will appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than the average moon.

According to Metservice meteorologist Tui McInnes, Auckland, Marlborough, Wellington and Nelson were expected to be the best locations to see the moon.

Supermoon, according to, is the term for when a full moon coincides with the moon's perigee, or the point at which it is closest to Earth.

The point on the moon's orbit closest to Earth is called the perigee and the point farthest away is the apogee.

On that occasion, the moon took on a reddish hue which was caused by a lunar eclipse - when the earth passes between the Moon and Sun, casting a shadow across the lunar surface.

The supermoon marks a big difference from 2018, when there was no full moon in February - called a Black Moon.
