Texas children found in dog cage

The children, who range in ages between one and five years old, were fed by authorities and sent to a hospital to be evaluated.

Inside the barn, deputies found two children locked in a dog kennel who showed signs of malnutrition and two others who also appeared to be malnourished and were only partially clothed and smeared with feces and urine.

Deputies on Tuesday discovered two malnourished children crammed into a locked dog cage and two more smeared with feces and urine in a barn in North Texas, in what a sheriff described as the worst case of child abuse he has ever seen.

"The four children have been taken to Cook's (Children's Medical Center) in Fort Worth to be examined", Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin said Tuesday in a telephone interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Deputies responded to a "shop-type" outbuilding near Rhome, which lies about 25 miles northwest of Fort Worth, after receiving a call around 7:20 a.m. reporting "some sort of physical altercation or argument", Johnson said.

Neighbor Amber Jester told the affiliate that she didn't know there were children at the home.

Deputies were speaking with a man and a woman, both 24, when they heard children's voices coming from the barn, Akin said.

Andrew Joseph Fabila is the father to one of the children, Harkings is the mother to all four of the children.

A North Texas couple is jailed without bond after four malnourished children were found in deplorable conditions at their rural home.

Fabila had to be taken to the hospital for wounds on his face before being charged but was taken to jail after his treatment. Fabila had cuts to his face.

"You'd think that being right across the street we would know something", she said.

'They were positioned in a manner where those small children would not have access.

Law enforcement and Department of Family and Protective Services staff are still investigating the case, Gonzales said.
