Measles outbreak in Philippines kills 70

Elsewhere, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that it is still deeply concerned about a measles outbreak in Madagascar, and though the full situation is still being assessed, the event has worsened since the first of the year.

Only three states prohibit all non-medical exemptions. There are 53 confirmed measles cases in Clark County, and two suspected cases, according to a Clark County Public Health press release. Officials also had confirmed one case in King County, Washington, which includes Seattle, and four cases in Multnomah County, Oregon, which includes Portland.

The controversy began in November 2017, when Dengvaxia manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur announced that the vaccine may not be effective in some cases and could lead to severe dengue infections among people who have not previously had the disease. More than 50 people have contracted the disease during the current outbreak.

Diphtheria, a bacterial disease prevented by a shot that usually combines vaccines for tetanus and whooping cough, is fatal in 5 per cent to 10 per cent of cases, according to the WHO.

Outbreaks in New York City and Rockland County have been ongoing since a year ago, and have been concentrated among Orthodox Jewish communities.

An estimated 90 per cent of those who come into close proximity with an infected person will catch it unless they are vaccinated or have natural immunity, the CDC estimates. "Subsequently, measles outbreaks have also increased".
