Jennifer Lopez responds to critics of Grammys Motown tribute

One commenter on Twitter complained, "Jennifer Lopez is doing the Motown tribute and when Janelle Monae is right there and I just don't understand the creative decision". Motown was a black-owned record label that put out music by predominantly black artists like the Supremes, the Temptations, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye.

Speaking with ET's Kevin Frazier backstage after her set, Lopez got emotional as she explained how her dynamic performance was also a tribute to her mother. "How do you do a Motown tribute without an ALL BLACK cast of artists?! Any type of music can inspire any type of artist", Lopez told Entertainment Tonight on Sunday, noting she grew up listening to Motown songs with her mom.

"I don't think anyone who is intelligent is upset", the 78-year-old singer shared. "Mommy, this is for you because we used to dance around to this music", she told E! ahead of her performance. Lopez came out to perform some of the biggest hits, including "Dancing in the Street", "Mr. Postman", "The Best Things in Life Are Free", and "Do You Love Me?"

There will be full Motown tribute show titled "Motown 60: A GRAMMY Celebration." which will be taped February 12 but air April 21 on CBS. "You gotta do what's in your heart". They argued the Grammys should've chosen an African American singer.

Despite Robinson's comments, an outpour of folks fired shots at Lopez's performance during the 61st annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, taking offense to just about every aspect of the tribute including Lopez's sparkled-covered costumes.

Robinson elaborated, "Motown was music for everybody". Lopez's performance did little to smooth things over with these viewers.

People were already puzzled when news that J. Lo would be performing the tribute and by the time she took the stage, music fans were waiting to see if she would pull it off.
