Iran marks 40th anniversary of Islamic Revolution

"Much to the dismay of America, the revolution has reached its 40th year", read one banner.

Prices of basic foodstuffs have soared since President Donald Trump withdrew Washington from world powers' 2015 nuclear deal with Iran a year ago and reimposed sanctions on Tehran.

Ballistic missile capabilities were on display during the main march, including the Qadr F, a ground-to-ground missile with a 1,950-km (1,220-mile) range, Tasnim news agency said.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told Iranians they should resist a "conspiracy" involving Washington.

Yadollah Javani, deputy head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps political bureau, said during a rally that Israel would pay if the U.S. attacked Iran.

In the backdrop to Monday's marches, the military displayed Iranian-made missiles, which authorities showcase every year during anniversary celebrations and which now have a range of up to 2,000 kilometres (1,250 miles) and are able to Israel and USA military bases in the region. "It has been moving forward over the past 40 years and making Iran stronger".

The Iranian people "will not stop saying "Death to America" as long as the USA acts malicious" toward Iran, Khamenei said, referring to Trump's State of the Union address in which the American president, among other things, said: "We will not avert our eyes from a regime that chants death to America".

In January, President Hassan Rouhani said his country was experiencing its worst economic crisis since the overthrow of the Shah.

The Israeli prime minister's comments came in direct response to IRGC political affairs spokesman Yadollah Javani, who warned earlier on Monday that Iran would attack Israel if threatened by Washington.

The Shah was the United States' closest ally in the Middle East. "But if they attack us, we will raze Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground", Brig.

"I don't ignore the threats from the Iranian regime, but I'm also not intimidated by them", Netanyahu said in a Hebrew-language video.

"If this regime makes the mistake of threatening us and tries to destroy Tel Aviv or Haifa, they won't succeed, and it will be the last anniversary of the revolution that they celebrate".

Today, the United States, its Arab allies and Israel are trying to counter Tehran's growing influence in the Middle East, where it has proxies in Syria, Lebanon and Yemen.

The cry of "Death to America" has long featured in the Islamic republic, with leaders and the public alike using it to vent their perception of America's supposed interest in working against the country.

Iran also has vast clout in Iraq, where Major-General Qassem Soleimani, head of the overseas arm of the Revolutionary Guards, was frequently photographed guiding Shi'ite militias in the war against Sunni Islamic State militants.
