Durban rescuers dig trench to save newborn stuck in a drain

It is believed authorities were alerted to the situation after a passerby heard the baby's cries.

Cllr De Boer said she has already received several requests from community members to foster or adopt the baby.

The team confirmed that a baby girl was stuck and was being washed further down the pipe.

He added that they can hear the baby crying and have gained access into the pipe.

Rising Sun Overport reports that Rescue Care paramedics together with Metro Search and Rescue and the eThekwini Fire Department worked fervently on the corner of Barracuda Road and Herring Circle in Newlands East to rescue the infant.

He said she was transported to Albert Luthuli Hospital via the AMS Medical Helicopter.

'Police will now be trying to investigate the circumstances that led to the baby being in the drain in the first place and will also be trying to trace the mother, ' he said.
