According to the complaint, Lilly stopped his auto in the lane of traffic and walked toward the bus.

Lilly was charged with second degree assault and taken into custody Tuesday, according to Time.

Kenneth Walter Lilly walked in front of a school bus his vehicle had collided with on Interstate 35W Tuesday afternoon, February 5, and repeatedly shot at the driver inside, authorities say.

The traffic camera footage released by police shows the bus, a pick-up truck and a sedan pull over to the side of the slow-moving vehicles going bumper to bumper on I-35. He walked to the passenger door and reportedly tried to get onto the bus. One child, unharmed, was in the back of the bus during the incident.

The violent ordeal unfolded after the alleged gunman, identified as 31-year-old Kenneth Lilly, drove his Toyota in front of a pickup truck and school bus before getting out of the auto and firing his gun, police said.

Lilly later called 911 to report the shooting.

Investigators say Lilly fired five rounds from a semi-automatic 9-millimeter pistol.

"The filing of the complaint tells you that we do not believe there was a self-defense claim based upon the evidence we have received so far", Chief Deputy Hennepin County Attorney David Brown told reporters.

"We nearly start running out of ways to describe this".

Police say the bus driver was hit in the head but his wounds weren't life-threatening. "It is just horrific".

He is expected to make his first appearance on the charges in Hennepin County District Court Friday.

This is the horrifying moment a man opened fire on a school bus driver during a road rage clash on a snowy American highway.

Lilly apparently told troopers that he feared for his safety as he approached the doorway of the bus.

The man in the video appeared to be wearing a security guard uniform.
