Chicago prepares for record-low subzero temperatures

Temperatures will be above freezing during the time it should be raining, so frozen precipitation is not expected.

On Sunday, temperatures dropped to negative 44 degrees Fahrenheit in Minnesota, breaking the previous record for the most frigid weather ever experienced there by 8 degrees, according to the NWS, while "dangerous, life-threatening cold air" will envelop Iowa from Tuesday through Friday. Wind chill attempts to quantify the effect in terms of how it feels on our skin, which is why you'll sometimes hear it called the "feels like" temperature.

Absurdly cold weather is about to grip much of the USA, trapping millions of Americans in sub-zero temperatures and bringing "dangerous to impossible travel conditions".

The National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center said that parts of southeastern Minnesota and Wisconsin could see over a foot of snow.

Further, the weather service says the Rockford area could get colder than the record low minus 27 on Wednesday. This will continue here and there through the day on Tuesday, not expecting more than a coating here or there. Look for a high around 20 degrees at midnight.

Heavy snow and gusting winds have created blizzard-like conditions across the Upper Midwest, prompting officials to close hundreds of schools, courthouses and businesses, and ground air travel.

In Wisconsin, plow drivers were having a hard time keeping up with the snow in Sheboygan.

"We're very concerned about the arctic air and the temperatures", Davis said.

Places as far south as Jackson, Mississippi; Birmingham, Alabama; and Chattanooga, Tennessee, may see upwards of an inch of snow. More than three dozen flights were canceled early Monday at Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee County. Areas of Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and OH are under a wind chill watch, while parts of Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky and West Virginia have been placed under winter weather advisories. A band of afternoon rain, sleet and later snow will leave accumulated snow more widely by nightfall. The county's courts and nonessential services will be closed Monday.

City services have been postponed in Chicago, where around five inches of snow fell Monday night.

The Weather Service office serving Chicago is predicting temperatures will remain below zero for 60 consecutive hours, from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday.
