"That was a very important moment, it made us realise we were ready to compete in the Premier League".

Neves, whose Wolves side visit the Etihad on Monday, tends to play as one of two holding midfielders, whereas Fernandinho performs that role on his own in the City line-up.

City have been linked with a move for Frenkie de Jong from Ajax at the end of this season, but the Dutch midfielder is attracting significant interest from other clubs too. But, of course, for the next season it's an important target to find.

"If you have no injuries and you are satisfied, like in our case, with your players and your squad you have, we decided, going well or going bad, to go with the players we had at the start of the season".

When asked about potential replacements for Ferdandino last week, Guardiola told reporters: "Maybe there aren't many, but there are players who can play in that role". The 21-year-old helped Wolves gain promotion after signing from Porto in a £15.8 million deal in the summer of 2017 and the Portugal player has impressed in the top flight this season. "When you are behind then the team on top gets extra confidence and every time it becomes fewer games to play and it will be so hard to catch them".

"But of course we cannot substitute the mother and, when the family can't be there, it's hard".

He said: "He's an excellent player".

Guardiola said: "Gundogan played the last two games like a holding midfielder".

"That's not going to happen".

"There are many clubs in the world, many holding midfielders in the world, and majority can play here". Of course, in all departments in the club, we have in every position four or five or six options - depending on age, what we believe and, of course, the price.

"But privately in the green room with Jamie Carragher I have been saying, 'Your lot can win this, they are capable of winning it, they look like a team that can do it'".

They also want another midfielder in addition to De Jong but Guardiola is adamant that they have no intention of meeting Wolves's £100 million valuation of Neves ahead of Monday's game at home to the Midlands club. "We put our standards high", he says. "I'm happy here, happy with my play and happy in the team".
