Yankees signing DJ Lemahieu as Manny Machado hopes fade

This does not definitively close the book on Machado going to NY, which has always been viewed as his ideal landing spot.

The Yankees have signed free-agent second basement DJ LeMahieu, giving them an abundance of infielders.

Their infield also includes rising stars Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar at second and third bases, respectively.

Days after Chicago signed free-agent outfielder Jon Jay, a longtime friend of Machado's, the Philadelphia Phillies have added former Baltimore Orioles third-base coach Bobby Dickerson as their new infield coach, multiple reports indicated Thursday night.

A team like the Milwaukee Brewers, connected to Machado at last year's trade deadline, could make sense, as could the St. Louis Cardinals.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic recently wrote that the Phillies actually prefer Machado over Harper in free agency. But there have been rumors that the Yankees are only lukewarm on Machado, and may not even top TWO hundred million in an offer.

Some reports that the White Sox unwilling to move past seven years for Machado, whereas the Phillies might be willing to go a little further.

It'll be interesting to see how the Yankees envision LeMahieu fitting in - and does his addition mean they're out of the Machado sweepstakes?

The Yankees have been considered the Phillies' biggest obstacle to landing Machado because of the idea that he's wanted for years to play in the Bronx. But the general consensus is that he will sign his deal first, with the Phillies and Chicago White Sox the main two players for his services.
