Trump concealed details of Putin meeting

"The Washington Post is nearly as bad, or probably as bad as the New York Times", Trump said.

The Post claims that Trump confiscated his translator's notes after he and Putin first met in person on July 7, 2017 on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Hamburg.

President Trump was so intent on keeping his chats with Vladimir Putin secret, he once made his interpreter turn over his notes and promise to never discuss them, current and former USA officials told The Washington Post.

The New York Times reported the probe began in the days after Trump fired James Comey as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in May 2017 and said the agency's counterintelligence investigators had to consider whether his actions constituted a possible threat to national security.

Trump responded: "I think it's the most insulting thing I've ever been asked.the most insulting article I've ever had written & if you read the article, you'd see that they found absolutely nothing". I'm not keeping anything under wraps....

Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani told the Times he had no knowledge of the inquiry but said that since it was opened a year and a half ago and they hadn't heard anything, apparently "they found nothing".

Donald Trump has said he "couldn't care less" after a series of bombshell reports over the weekend shed further light on his relationship with Vladimir Putin. They also sought to determine whether Trump was deliberately working for Russian Federation or had unintentionally been influenced by Moscow.

"I think it's the most insulting thing I've ever been asked".

The FBI had been suspicious of Trump's ties to Russian Federation during the 2016 campaign, but it held off on opening a probe until the president sacked Comey, who refused to roll back the Russian Federation investigation, the Times said.

The constraints that Trump imposed are part of a broader pattern by the president of shielding his communications with Putin from public scrutiny and preventing even high-ranking officials in his own administration from fully knowing what he has told one of the United States' main adversaries.

Mr Comey took to Twitter later on Saturday, offering a quote he attributed to former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt: "I ask you to judge me by the enemies I have made".

That investigation was taken over by Special Counsel Robert Mueller when he was appointed in May of 2017.

He added: "Anybody could have listened to that meeting, that meeting is up for grabs".

The White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, called the Times report "absurd" and said Comey was sacked for being "a disgraced partisan hack".

Trump said that it was "the most insulting article I've ever had written [about me]" on Saturday, and asserted that he has been "tougher on Russian Federation than anybody else, any other - probably any other president period".

Trump also took aim at an earlier story in The New York Times stating that the FBI launched a previously undisclosed counterintelligence investigation to determine whether he posed a national security threat, at the same time that it opened a criminal probe into possible obstruction of justice.

Trump has repeatedly criticized the Mueller probe as a "witch hunt" and views it as an attempt to besmirch the legitimacy of his presidency.

In 2018 Trump refused to impose sanctions on Russian Federation that were passed into law nearly unanimously past year and was created to punish Moscow's alleged meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

Mueller has indicted 33 people in the probe and convicted some of the president's close associates.
