The Liverpool manager will be without Dejan Lovren for the game due to the hamstring problem he picked up in the early stages of the 2-1 loss, while Joel Matip is not likely to have recovered from a broken collarbone in time.

Sources told ESPN FC on Thursday that Liverpool have no plans to recruit a defender in January because of a long-held belief that Fabinho can operate adequately in the position. Dejan out. Joe, of course, out.

Asked if Lovren's injury was serious, Klopp replied: 'I don't know. It's not that serious. "We have to see".

Depending on Matip's fitness, Fabinho, normally a defensive midfielder, could play at centre-back as the Premier League leaders look to respond to back-to-back defeats. His late withdrawal meant Lovren - who was due to be rested with Virgil Van Dijk - had to play.

"If Fabinho has to play as a centre half what we want is the natural understanding of the game", he said.

I know the fans care and from our point of view I'm sorry for that because we are trying to do the right thing here. But Nicholas said: "I take it that it's not sportsmanlike but any angle you can take in the modern day game.

"Yes, if he was playing and had scored 20 goals in the last 10 games". Intriguingly, Henderson was pencilled in to to play centre-back alongside Fabinho in the FA Cup tie prior to his injury.

Klopp said: "Could he [Lallana] be in a better place mentally?"

"If you have the full squad together it's massive, it's really good", he said of the lighter schedule.

"I would love to still be in these competitions, but we are not".

He told The Argus: "Sometimes you gauge how good the top are by how numerous bottom ten are going to get results against the top six teams".
