The House Oversight and Reform Committee announced Thursday that Cohen will appear before that panel February 7, a little more than a month after the Democrats took the House majority.

"I thank Michael Cohen for agreeing to testify before the Oversight Committee voluntarily", Cummings said in a statement.

"We don't want to do anything to interfere with the Mueller investigation - absolutely nothing", Cummings said.

"I look forward to having the privilege of being afforded a platform with which to give a full and credible account of the events which have transpired", Cohen said.

Cohen, who served as Trump's attorney and fixer for years, came under scrutiny from federal prosecutors in NY over hush money payments he orchestrated during the 2016 presidential campaign to silence Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal, two women who alleged having extramarital affairs with Trump.

Cohen has admitted to offering "hush-money" to two women regarding their affairs with Donald Trump, paying porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal in exchange for their silence regarding their alleged sexual affairs with the president.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

The session will come just under a month before he is due to turn himself in for a three-year prison sentence.

Mr Cohen has made a few public comments since he was convicted of offences including tax fraud and a campaign finance violation.

Cohen cooperated with Mueller's investigation after his August guilty plea, and his congressional testimony could thrust some of those still-private details he provided into the public sphere.

Mr Trump has denied the affairs and any involvement in the payments.

At the time of Cohen's sentencing, federal authorities announced a deal not to prosecute American Media Inc. Mueller's team in court filings wrote that Cohen provided "useful information concerning certain discrete Russia-related matters core to its investigation".

Trump told reporters in Texas on Thursday that he's "not anxious about it at all".

Democrats won back the House past year promising to hold Trump and his administration to account and have begun laying the groundwork for a long run of investigations targeting his administrator's policies and ethics lapses, Trump's businesses and his campaign's interactions with Russian Federation.

"It will be necessary, however, for Mr Cohen to answer questions pertaining to the Russian Federation investigation, and we hope to schedule a closed session before our committee in the near future".

The newly installed chairmen of at least two other panels, the Judiciary and Intelligence committees, have said they want to speak with Cohen about his work on behalf of Trump.

The hearing will kick off what is expected to a swirl of attacks on Mr Trump from the House of Representatives after Democrats captured the body from Republicans in November's election.
