And while Trump claimed that law enforcement professionals were the ones who requested $5.7 billion for the border wall, Shep clarified that it was actually the president himself who requested the funding and "and he himself who said he would own the shutdown". But she said there was "no way" the shutdown fight would drag on for years as Trump warned last week.

"For those who refuse to compromise in the name of in the name of border security, I would ask, imagine if it was your child, your husband or your wife whose life was so cruelly shattered and totally broken", Trump said.

At a private meeting with House Republicans, Vice President Mike Pence cited a C.S. Lewis quote calling courage a virtue, and he said Trump has no plans to retreat.

Democrats, newly in control of the House of Representatives, have said they will not allocate any money toward the wall, which remains a popular concept within Trump's base but has little support from the broader American public.

Above all, if the nation truly faces a humanitarian and security crisis, why should the government remain in partial shutdown - particularly employees at the Department of Homeland Security?

Earlier on Sunday, Trump had offered to erect a steel barrier rather than a concrete wall along the border to iron out differences with Democrats over the issue which has resulted in a partial government shutdown for over a fortnight.

Senator Schumer said Mr Trump "just used the backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear and divert attention from the turmoil in his administration". But he did not mention that Tuesday night.

She blamed Trump's "obsession with forcing American taxpayers to waste billions of dollars on an expensive and ineffective wall - a wall he always promised Mexico would pay for!"

The 76th annual Golden Globe Awards aired on Sunday with the lowest viewership in three years, a total of 18.6 million viewers. The film also won the Best Motion Picture (Drama ) award pipping the likes of A Star Is Born in this category.

Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi were meanwhile planning to hold an event with furloughed federal workers to highlight the impact of the shutdown, which has forced the closure of national parks, placed certain food and drug inspections on hold, and sparked concerns over air travel.

"America's heart broke the day after Christmas when a young police officer in California was savagely murdered in cold blood by an illegal alien (who) just came across the border".

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers are going without pay, and Government disruptions are hitting home with everyday Americans.

"They don't build walls because they hate the people on the outside, but because they love the people on the inside".

It was Mr Trump's first official address from the Oval Office. But critics say the security risks are overblown and the administration is at least partly to blame for the humanitarian situation.

Trump used emotional language, referring to Americans who were killed by people in the country illegally, saying: "I've met with dozens of families whose loved ones were stolen by illegal immigration".

In fact, a study by the libertarian Cato Institute previous year found that crime rates among immigrants in Texas - both legal and unauthorized - were lower than those among native-born Americans.
