Last year, the flu killed more than 80,000 Americans, including a record 185 children.

Last flu season in Riverside County, the deaths of 23 people aged 64 or younger were linked with the flu, according to the release.

The Public Health Agency of Canada reports that 414 children under the age of 16 had to be hospitalized due to influenza across Canada since September, including 71 who had to be admitted to the ICU.

That total represents roughly one-fifth of the 10,335 confirmed cases at this time last flu season.

Moore said physicians at CHEO are seeing cases of RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) and other viruses as well as some flu. (Lab-confirmed cases represent a small percentage of all flu cases, often just the ones that require hospitalization).

Ontario got off to slower start to the season compared to Alberta, for instance, which began getting hit with the respiratory illness in late October, early November.

"So we're probably on track to coming up to more of our peak activity in the next couple of weeks or so".

A total of 13 children have died so far this flu season.

Dr. Walshak says it's not too late to get the flu shot. H3N2, the strain largely responsible for last year's outbreak, has so far been less common than the H1N1 strain.

"While most people will get better themselves from flu, anyone who is concerned about their condition should telephone their GP or an out of hours medical service so they can arrange to be treated in a way that does not put others at risk".

That also goes for healthy adults who are in close contact with people in those groups or with babies under six months of age who are too young to be inoculated against influenza, she said.

A spokesperson for the HSE said that the best way to protect yourself is to get the flu vaccine. It also misstated the percentage of children that make up B.C.'s population.
