Solari in the dark about VAR after Madrid penalty controversy

Former Madrid forward Predrag Mijatovic said of the 29-year-old: "He is nowhere near being a leader at a team like Real Madrid after Cristiano's exit".

Of the 15 matches that Solari has overseen in charge, he's handed two starts to Isco; neither of them coming in the league.

Real Madrid coach Santiago Solari on Tuesday called for the video assistant referee rules to be made clearer after admitting he has no idea how the system works following penalty controversy at the weekend.

The technology is what it is, but it has gaps; it is there to see what the referee does not and, if Modric's comments are correct, Munuera Montero was told that he was correct in his decision.

"He has hope, but we are out there on the field and we have to do better to have more concentration".

Madrid were reduced to 10 men in the second half after Lucas Vazquez was shown a second yellow card but by then they already trailed to Willian Jose's early penalty.

It has been a testing season for Real Madrid, and last night's humiliating defeat to 12th place Real Sociedad was the cherry on top of the slightly mouldy cake for Santiago Solari and his Los Blancos side.

"I give the benefit of the doubt to the referee for the first incident, but the second one is a penalty every day of the week".

Real director Emilio Butragueno also took issue with the VAR. It was a critical moment in the game.

The club has reportedly been enraged by his performance as Montero failed to even consult VAR after Vinicius Junior was brought down in the box.

Luka Modric, meanwhile, sought to play down the pressure on Solari, telling AS: "VAR is not something we can think about as players, maybe it is unusual we have not received a penalty but that is the way football is". To be frank, it was once again not a very poor showing by the Merengues but they certainly lacked the goal scoring touch despite their being a lot of creativity in the final third throughout the match.
