The husband of a woman who allegedly drove around for 15 minutes with their four-year-old son clinging to the car's roof has broken his silence.

Motorists attempted to alert the 36-year-old repeatedly as the silver Holden travelled along Wright Road, in Harrisdale, on Friday at 5.45pm, 9 News reports.

Security camera vision obtained by 9News captured part of the journey, showing the child dressed only in a nappy, sitting upright on top of the auto.

Police are now investigating.

Witnesses claimed when the woman got out of the auto she genuinely seemed unaware her son was sitting on the roof.

He confirmed there were two other children in the vehicle but they were properly restrained in their seats.
