As of last Saturday, nine states have high flu activity.

The CDC reports four more children died from the virus last week, bringing the total to at least 11 so far this season. To date, 1,339 flu cases have been reported and lab-confirmed this flu season.

Health officials urged people to get vaccinated for the flu.

County health officials Wednesday reported the death of a San Diego County man due to flu complications, bringing this flu season's death toll in the region to seven.

The CDC recently released data on early season flu vaccination coverage in the United States, with new numbers showing that vaccination rates are up compared to the same time last season.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, during last year's flu season, about 80 percent of flu-related deaths occurred in kids who were not vaccinated.

People with the flu often experience fever, chills, coughing, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue, according to the CDC. Many people people become ill suddenly and recover within a few weeks with rest. In addition to doctors, pharmacists in NY may administer the flu vaccine to anyone two years of age and older.

"We want them to be done as early as possible but, if you haven't gotten the flu shot, it is not too late." said family physician Jennifer Caudle, M.D.

Although the vaccine won't prevent all cases of the flu, it lessens the severity and duration of symptoms, and those who get flu after receiving a vaccine are less likely to require hospitalization and less likely to die.
