Tennessee's county health departments are holding special "FightFluTN" events across the state today, December 5, to provide flu shots at no charge to increase the number of people vaccinated in Tennessee.

"Getting a flu shot is the best way to protect ourselves from the flu", said Health Commissioner Mark Levine, MD. Of the 180 pediatric deaths reported in the USA last season, 80 percent occurred in children who had not had a flu shot.

As an indication of these misbeliefs, a recent study found that 43 percent of Americans, believe that the seasonal flu shot can give you the influenza virus.

"It's nicer to get it done a little earlier in the season so that you're protected a little earlier, but it is absolutely not too late to get it".

The flu continues to take a toll on Oklahomans as flu season spreads through the state.

One hundred eighty-five children were confirmed to have died from complications of the flu, while an estimated 600 more were suspected, but not confirmed, to have died from complications of the flu. The other patient who died from the virus was between 50-years-old and 64-years-old.

"There were no vaccines to protect against flu virus infection, no antiviral drugs to treat flu illness, and no antibiotics to treat secondary bacterial infections like pneumonia", the CDC said on its website.

In total, 52,000 cases of the flu were reported in 2018, compared with almost 250,000 cases in the same period previous year. In addition, the Louisiana Department of Health is making flu shots available at parish health units to allow people an easy way to get flu shots at no cost to the patient.

Most US adults have not gotten a flu shot this season, according to a new survey from NORC, a research organization at the University of Chicago.

A flu shot is especially crucial for people who may be at higher risk for serious complications.

People with compromised immune systems are advised to talk with their doctor about whether a flu shot is appropriate.

In addition, people should wash their hands frequently, cover their coughs and sneezes and encourage others to do so as well, she said.

Nurses can talk with patients and families about ways in which they can talk to their visitors about the importance of receiving the flu vaccine and can work with them to perhaps set limits or discourage visitors who have not been vaccinated.
