The famous "death wobble" isn't the only major issue plaguing the new generation Jeep Wrangler, as the SUV isn't as safe as one would think.

The Fiat Panda scored 0 stars and worst child protection score ever to be recorded in crash tests conducted by Euro NCAP. In fact, the lane-keep assist and emergency braking are not standard on the Euro-spec new Jeep Wrangler.

"It is truly disappointing to see a brand-new vehicle being put on sale in 2018 with no autonomous braking system and no lane assistance", said Michiel van Ratingen, the secretary general of Euro NCAP, in a statement.

"We're working with Fiat Chrysler Australia to determine the safety specification of models to be supplied locally", said ANCAP CEO James Goodwin.

"Further, the Jeep Wrangler is engineered to deliver superior performance and unique driving experiences under the most demanding conditions".

In contrast, the four-wheel drive off-road Jeep Wrangler is an all-new vehicle, fresh to the market in 2018.

•Another poor performer in this month's round of Euro NCAP testing was the new Jeep Wrangler, which only achieved a one star rating. It wasn't able to score more than 50 per cent in any of the test categories, and most concerning of all, it managed just 16 per cent when it came to Child Occupant Protection. The deformation of the footwell indicated that it had reached the limit of its integrity.

The Jeep Wrangler variant tested by Euro NCAP was the four-door Sahara Unlimited, but the rating applies to all variants sold in Europe. In the full-width rigid barrier test, the driver's chest protection was rated as marginal and neck protection was rated as weak.

The Wrangler also carries Australian Design Rule (ADR) approval for use on Australian roads, despite any safety score issued by crash test authorities.

Independent testers rated adult occupant protection at 89 percent, confirming that they are well protected in an accident.

Because the independent safety watchdog regularly updates and tightens its rules, it apparently seemed instructive to retest that auto that is still on sale seven years later.
