Former FBI Director James Comey left his hearing with the Republican lead House of Representatives on Friday and promptly trashed the process.

But on Friday, Comey is not bound by a confidentiality agreement.

Trump's bete noire had pleaded for a public hearing after he was subpoenaed by members of the outgoing Congress in November, but House Republicans including some of Trump's allies insisted on a private session before the judiciary and oversight committees. Following his testimony, Comey said he would return to answer more questions on December 17. "We would be giving him a pass that I don't think he deserves", added Meadows.

Comey was questioned as part of a Republican-led House inquiry into possible Russian interference in the U.S. election, and email use by Democrat Hillary Clinton, who lost to Trump in 2016.

Issa suggested the committee might bring Comey back because he wasn't answering questions.

Democrats had much different takes on Capitol Hill this morning, telling the press that the closed door meeting with Comey is unnecessary and clearly a ploy to disrupt special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe.

"The Department of Justice is going to have to agree to allow him to come back and answer a great many questions that now he is not answering", he said.

In a later tweet, Trump said his lawyer, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, would release a response to any conclusions Mueller reports.

He gave a wry answer when asked if he was "best friends" with Mueller, as Trump has tweeted.

"Don't do it in a dark corner and don't do it in a way where all you do is leak information", said Comey's attorney, David Kelley.

After the court fight was resolved, Goodlatte said a transcript will be released "as soon as possible after the interview, in the name of our combined desire for transparency". Yet it did not second-guess his conclusion that Clinton should not have been prosecuted, despite assertions by Trump and his supporters that anyone less politically connected would have been charged.

Comey was the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation until Trump dismissed him on May 9, 2017.
