Ocasio-Cortez's pledge comes a day after she criticized her future colleagues in Congress, including Democrats, for not paying interns.

The problem, as numerous critics were quick to point out, is that the supposed accounting fraud at the Pentagon consists of poorly documented internal transfers at the Defense Department and has no clear cost basis, even if true.

It is not the first time that Ocasio-Cortez has drawn attention to the high cost of living and inequality in the US capital. His conclusion: "there's no $21 trillion pot of gold that can be raided to pay for a comprehensive health insurance program, even though the United States really does spend an very bad lot on the military". "SEVERAL bartenders, managers, & servers *currently worked in Senate + House offices, *" she wrote.

Ocasio-Cortez said that Congress should also increase wages for paid staffers so they can afford to live in Washington, D.C., one of the most expensive cities in the US.

In a follow-up tweet, the newly-elected Democratic Socialist from NY argued that it was unfair for Congress to "rely on unpaid interns & underpaid overworked staff". It found that in the Senate, 51% of Republicans and 31% of Democrats pay their interns.

Congress, until recently, has historically provided unpaid internships in all but a few roles on Capitol Hill.

Both the Senate and the House legislation in 2018 to set aside funding to pay interns starting in 2019, with the House appropriating $8 million toward it and the Senate setting aside $5 million.

"Many members of Congress were born into wealth, or they grew up around it", she told Bon Appetit last month.
