The couple married on 1 December in India, with spectacular three-day wedding celebrations, including a traditional Hindu ceremony.

After the worldwide blowback, the article was taken down and replaced with an apology. This led the publication to announce it would pull the story on Wednesday, tweeting: "An earlier story about Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas did not meet our standards. But when a brown woman does the same thing, she is painted as a "scam artist"," commented Kathleen Davis.

Several Twitter users called the piece racist, arguing a white woman's consumption of luxury goods would attract less scrutiny than that of an Indian woman, as well as sexist, portraying Jonas as wide-eyed and honest, in contrast to the scheming Chopra. "We've removed it and apologise".

Many Indian and U.S. digital outlets also took aim at the controversial piece, spawning various rebuttals that called out its "xenophobic" tone.

Priyanka and Nick confirmed their engagement in August this year after a private Roka ceremony that took place at her Mumbai residence, which was followed by a grand party.
