The authors say their version of the procedure isn't meant to replace the possibility of using a living donor, but rather to give women with uterine problems another option. And 35-and-a-half weeks after that, she gave birth to a seemingly healthy baby girl, delivered via cesarean section with no complications. Seven months later, the team transferred an IVF-created embryo into the womb.

The transplanted uterus was removed during the C-section, allowing the woman to stop taking the immunosuppressive drugs.

The woman's previously fertilised and frozen eggs were implanted after seven months and, 10 days later, she was confirmed pregnant, it said.

Almost a year later, the mother and baby are both healthy.

A woman who received a uterus transplant from a deceased donor has given birth to a healthy baby girl, according to a paper in the Lancet.

It is hoped that this, the first ever uterine transplant involving a deceased donor and the first uterine transplantation in Latin America, could enable more women struggling with fertility issues to undergo treatment without having to wait for a live donor.

"Successful pregnancy, without evidence of any compromise in spite of the uterus (womb) being without oxygen for eight hours before transplant, was unique".

"The Brazilian group has proven that using deceased donors is a viable option", said the clinic's Dr. Tommaso Falcone, who was involved in the OH case.

While womb transplants from living donors have been successful, womb transplants from deceased donors still need to be researched, as none of the deceased donor transplants has until now resulted in conception and birth.

According to reports, the success of this procedure means that there will be a larger option of donors available for those who have trouble conceiving because of uterine factor infertility.

The uterus came from a 45-year-old woman who died from a brain hemorrhage.

Next, the team will repeat the procedure in two more patients.

The baby girl was born in December 2017, but had to be closely monitored to ensure she was meeting appropriate developmental milestones.

Uterine transplants aren't about to become standard just yet.

In a surgery lasting 10.5 hours, the uterus was removed from the donor and transplanted into the recipient, where it was connected to the recipient's veins and arteries as well as her ligaments and vaginal canals.

It is a very good thing compared to a live donor, she noted.

"In an expanding field such as uterus transplantation, the role of collaborative networks and societies such as the International Society of Uterus Transplantation or new interest groups in already existing scientific societies will be crucial".

"It enables use of a much wider potential donor population, applies lower costs and avoids live donors' surgical risks".

In the US, around 10 percent of women aged between 15 to 44 struggle with fertility, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A team of doctors in Brazil have announced a medical first that could someday help countless women unable to have children because of a damaged or absent uterus.
