Amid Khashoggi furore, Saudi ambassador Khalid bin Salman returns to US

President Trump and members of his administration have dismissed the CIA's conclusion that the crown prince was behind Khashoggi's killing and have rejected taking action against the country.

However US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker said he had "zero question in my mind" that Prince Mohammed directed the killing after an hour-long briefing to a small group of senators by Central Intelligence Agency director Gina Haspel. John McCain, who has been on board with much of President Donald Trump's agenda since McCain's death in August, Graham has sided with critics of Trump's Saudi Arabia policy over the Khashoggi incident. Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, is the leading sponsor of the measure.

The resolution says the Senate believes Mohammed bin Salman "was in control of security forces" during the killing and has "a high level of confidence" that the crown prince was "complicit" in the murder, based on "evidence and analysis made available".

Saudi Arabia is leading a campaign in Yemen against the Houthis, Shia Muslim fighters that Yemen's neighbors view as agents of Iran.

"What we know about this murder leaves you with no doubt that the crown prince, at a minimum, knew about it, condoned it and perhaps, at worst, was actually involved in directing it", Rubio told CNN.

"Let me just put it this way: I think if he was in front of a jury, he would have a unanimous verdict in about 30 minutes".

"Not everything needs to be secret", the Connecticut Democrat tweeted.

The United States had, separately, sanctioned 17 Saudi officials it accused of involvement in the killing, and one of them had been a close adviser to the prince.

Senators had wanted a briefing from Haspel about the CIA's assessment that bin-Salman was behind the killing but the Trump administration had sent instead secretaries of state and defence Mike Pompeo and James Mattis to bring them. "Zero question in my mind".

"If our government knows that Saudi leaders were involved in the murder of a USA resident, why shouldn't the public know this?"

On Tuesday, bowing to demands from Republicans such as Sen.

The U.S. has slapped sanctions on Saudis involved in the murder.

Last week, Pompeo claimed there was no definitive evidence that MbS was behind Khashoggi's murder, while Mattis simply said there was "no smoking gun".

Haspel delivered a closed-door briefing on the Khashoggi murder to Republican and Democratic leaders of the Senate Foreign Relations, Armed Services and Appropriations committees on Tuesday morning. Some 14 million people face starvation, and recent studies estimate 85,000 children under five have starved to death.

"There are lots of Republicans who are going to try to water this down, but they'll have to find 50 votes, and I'm not sure that they have 50 votes for a substitute".
