Luka Modric has won the 2018 Ballon d'Or ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Antoine Griezman, with Lionel Messi coming fifth.

Griezmann helped France to 2018 World Cup glory in Russian Federation, while he also enjoyed a triumphant Europa League campaign with Atletico but the 27-year-old finished third behind Modric on Monday.

Ronaldo's older sister Kate also got involved posting a picture of Ronaldo with the caption: "Best player in the world....for those who understand football of course".

Real Madrid's Luka Modric arrives with his family for the Golden Ball, "Ballon d'Or" award ceremony at the Grand Palais in Paris.

He won the Golden Ball for his contribution in Russian Federation and was named the Best FIFA Footballer of the Year in September, and is the first Croatian to claim the Ballon d'Or.

"This award is for all the players who probably deserved to win it and didn't".

Also, Norwegian forward Ada Hegerberg won the inaugural women's Ballon d'Or.

Harry Kane, the only English player on the 30-man shortlist, ranked 10th in the poll after winning the World Cup Golden Boot in Russian Federation as he captained England to their best finish in 28 years.

"Maybe in the past, there are some players who could have won the Ballon d'Or like Xavi, Andres Iniesta or Sneijder but people finally now are looking at someone else", he told BBC Football. I want to thank my teammates and coaches at Real Madrid and those with the national team.

Under the current format, the list of nominees is drawn up by weekly magazine France Football, with journalists from around the world voting on the final victor.

Mario Mandžukić, who retired from global football after the World Cup, was ranked 25th. "I want to end this speech with a message to all young girls in the world". Hegerberg refused and quickly left the stage. "It's all about how we respect women's football".
