Bridenstine said that while NASA wants the companies to succeed, the space agency is certain some of the efforts will fail. NASA is now working with commercial partners to carry astronauts to and from the space station. The Google Lunar X Prize, started in 2007, announced a $20 million award for the first privately funded spacecraft to land on the moon.

The last time a human was on the moon, over 45 years ago, the mission totaled $25 billion, which adjusted for inflation would look more like $150 billion today. SMD serves as the NASA interface between the agency's mission directorates, the scientific community, and other external stakeholders in developing a strategy to enable an integrated approach for robotic and human exploration within NASA's Moon to Mars Exploration Campaign.

Earlier this month, The Washington Post broke the news that NASA would conduct reviews of workplace culture in both SpaceX and Boeing following Musk's behavior on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast.
