Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced three new instance offerings for Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2): A1 instances powered by custom-designed AWS Graviton processors for scale-out workloads; P3dn GPU instances ideal for distributed machine learning and high performance computing applications; and C5n instances that deliver increased network bandwidth for running advanced compute-intensive workloads.

"This is the world's first fully-managed ground station as a service", AWS CEO Andy Jassy told a press briefing at the AWS event in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

AWS IoT Things Graph is a new service that makes it easer to build IoT applications with little or no code by connecting different devices and Cloud services, such as linking humidity sensors to sprinklers to weather data services to create an agricultural application, through a visual drag-and-drop interface.

Customers can rent access to AWS Ground Station facilities by the minute and take advantage of data transit costs greatly reduced by that proximity to its data centers, as well as AWS cloud services for storage and analysis. They are starting with two ground stations today as they launch the service, but plan to expand it to 12 by the middle of next year. It will monitor how demand develops before deciding how many more stations to add.

With this new service, AWS will provide ground antennas through their existing network of worldwide availability zones, as well as data processing services to simplify the entire data retrieval and processing process for satellite companies, or for others who consume the satellite data. 8K Miles' proven capability, customer commitment, and market leadership through demonstrated AWS deployment success are the key milestones for this accomplishment.

Customers can easily request Lockheed Martin Verge as their preferred downlink directly through the AWS Ground Station console or from the Verge management console. Their satellite data is used in vehicle navigation and for tracking global incidents where first responders can save people in disaster areas or war zones.

Customers and partners now previewing the AWS Ground Station are Lockheed Martin, Digital Globe, HawkEye, Advanced Space, Open Cosmos, Black Sky, Capella Space and others.

According to AWS, customers can use AWS Ground Station on an as-needed, pay-as-you-go basis.

AWS will use Lockheed Martin's new Verge antenna network for the new service, which will help customers download data from multiple satellites at the same time, Rick Ambrose, Executive Vice-President of Lockheed Martin, said.

AWS and Lockheed will integrate Verge (Virtual Resilient Ground)-the aerospace giant's low-priced, compact and turn-key solution for deploying ground antennas.
