General Motors to slash 14,000 jobs across North America

General Motors plans to halt production at five factories in North America and cut thousands of jobs.

He said instead, the province will immediately bolster unemployment insurance and retraining measures to help the almost 3,000 workers who will lose their jobs.

The company also said it will stop operating two additional factories outside North America by the end of next year, in addition to a previously announced plant closure in Gunsan, South Korea.

Both U.S. vehicle assembly plants scheduled to stop production next year now build slow-selling passenger cars. I know some people are also feeling angry and betrayed.

"We estimate sedans operate at a significant loss, hence the need for classic restructuring", he wrote.

General Motors announced Monday that it is set to lay off roughly 14,700 workers, a number which represents 15 percent of all its salaried employees. Toyota Motor Corp. also has discussed cutting costs, even though it's building a new assembly plant in Alabama.

GM isn't the first to abandon much of its auto market. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles got out of small and midsize cars two years ago, while Ford announced plans to shed all cars but the Mustang sports auto in the the coming years.

It said earlier this month that it plans to move workers at its Pontiac propulsion facility to its Tech Center in Warren.

GM in recent years has worked to slice costs, with a goal of $6.5 billion in cuts this year alone.

"We're taking these actions while the economy is strong", Barra told reporters in Detroit.

Barra said tariffs on imported aluminum and steel have hit the company, but she stopped short of saying they had anything to do with the restructuring.

It is a hard day for the thousands of workers at hundreds of Ontario auto part suppliers that depend on the GM Oshawa Assembly Plant for much of their business, as well as for workers and small business owners throughout Oshawa and the wider Durham region.

The reductions could ripple through auto parts suppliers such as Aptiv and Magna International, Michaeli said.

Barra is reducing staff from operations that make conventional cars and hiring people who can design electric cars or add software prowess to GM Cruise, the automaker's autonomous vehicle unit in San Francisco.

"This industry is changing very rapidly".

In October, GM offered buyouts to 18,000 white-collar workers as part of a cost-cutting initiative.

GM's news release focused on the financial savings to the company that it predicts will come through these layoffs.

The cuts will happen during the remainder of the year and the first quarter of 2019. GM said its slimmed down production plan would allow it to share technology across all of its vehicles, reducing the amount of time and labor it takes to build cars.

A GM spokesman declined to comment.

Opening in 1907 as a manufacturing base for the Canadian McLaughlin Motor Car Company, both the plant and company were purchased by General Motors 11 years later. LaCrosse and Volt production will end March 1, while CT6 and Impala production would stop June 1.

The largest US carmaker also said it will halt production at facilities in Lordstown, Ohio, Hamtramck, Michigan, and Oshawa, Ontario.

GM will close 5 North America plants, another three elsewhere.

Unifor Local 222 shop chairman Greg Moffat said Monday the plant is not closing "without the fight of our lives".
