Peter Mirijanian, spokesman for Ivanka's ethics counsel Abbe Lowell, responded the report by saying she "sometimes used her private account", but that it was mainly just for logistics and her family's schedule.

For instance, while Clinton initially claimed none of her emails were "marked classified", it was later determined by the Federal Bureau of Investigation that 110 messages contained sensitive information at the time of their transmission. "There was no deleting like Hillary Clinton did, there was no servers in the basement like Hillary Clinton had", he continued.

A Trump administration official told CBS News that Ms Trump's emails did not contain classified information, and what had occurred was basically a lack of understanding of the rules.

Austin Evers, executive director of the liberal watchdog group American Oversight, which made the public records requests, found it hard to believe that Ivanka Trump was not aware that personal email use for government business raises ethics issues. She reportedly stopped using this email account after she was told that it was against the rules.

In a statement, Cummings said the committee launched a bipartisan investigation a year ago into White House officials' use of personal email accounts, but the White House did not provide the requested information.

Ron Johnson, chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, tweeted on Tuesday night that he has sent a letter to the White House asking for a briefing on the issue.

Trump's remarks come after media reports on Tuesday that Democrats in the House of Representatives plan to investigate Ivanka Trump's case.

"There are serious questions that Congress should immediately investigate", Mr Evers said in a statement. Trump said she was not familiar with some details of the rules, according to people with knowledge of her reaction. He also said Ivanka Trump did not set up a private server for the account, which he said was "never transferred or housed at Trump Organization".

Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, White House Senior Advisers, disembark from from Air Force One as they travel with US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump upon arrival at Pittsburgh International Airport in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, October 30, 2018, following the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue.

The committee has jurisdiction over all records and transparency laws-Cummings authored an update in 2014 that was signed into law which requires that every federal employee, including the president, must forward any message about official business sent using a private account to the employee's official account within 20 days. She has rarely portrayed any hesitation about being the central act of the Trump drama.

In a statement, he explained how the committee had attempted a bipartisan investigation into several White House officials' use of private email accounts for official purposes back in 2017. "I think even Ivanka, if she was interviewed about it, she'd have to say that it was a mistake".
