Resuming on 37 without loss, Pakistan began the day as favourites to chase down the 176 they needed for victory although New Zealand will have taken some hope from Pakistan's failure at the same ground past year to chase 136 against Sri Lanka.

New Zealand have not played a test match in nearly eight months since England visited them in March but their form in this format is relatively good overall having won six and drawn four of their last 11 tests.

Pakistan have bowled New Zealand out for 153 in the first innings of the first Test match in Abu Dhabi on Friday.

However, Patel removed opener Imam-ul-Haq and fellow spinner Ish Sodhi struck twice to take the wickets of Mohammad Hafeez and Haris Sohail as Pakistan lost three batsmen in eight balls to find themselves in trouble at 48-3.

An early wicket or two before stumps could have given the Black Caps a realistic hope - but so would have a lead of over 250 - which looked a real possibility when Watling and Nicholls combined for their stellar stand.

New Zealand, which surrendered a first innings lead of 74 runs, are 60 runs ahead with B.J. Watling batting on 15 and Henry Nicholls unbeaten on 13 at the break. Hasan took two in one over as Ross Taylor and Raval also made their way back, and the upshot of a session that had begun with New Zealand firmly in charge ended by Pakistan re-establishing the slim advantage they have held over their opponents. "In the end, it came down to the wire", said New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson.

Last man Mohammad Abbas hung on, surviving 10 deliveries while Ali farmed the strike, chipping away singles to reach 65 as Pakistan inched ever closer to their target of 176. New Zealand fought to successfully defend the second smallest target in its Test history with Patel and Wagner making the run-chase hard for Pakistan on a wearing wicket. Pakistan soon put the visitors under extreme pressure by taking three quick wickets. It is a habit New Zealand will look to keep Pakistan shackled to, and with 139 still to get, success is not an impossibility.

After this, no batsman could form a partnership as New Zealand's innings kept falling apart.

Hasan Ali bagged his maiden five-wicket haul in Test Cricket while leg-spinner Yasir Shah took his 14th five-wicket haul. The match is a great advertisement for Test cricket.
