But almost three weeks have come and gone since lottery fever swept the nation and the victor has still not come forward to claim their prize.

If the ticket is not claimed in the allotted time, "each participating state in the Mega Millions game will get back all the money that state contributed to the unclaimed jackpot", according to the Mega Millions website, noting that "each state uses its unclaimed lottery prizes for different purposes".

The winning numbers were 5, 28, 62, 65, 70 and Mega Ball 5.

The winning ticket, which had the correct combination for the $1.586 billion jackpot, was sold at KC Mart in Simpsonville, South Carolina, where stores receive 1 percent of the value of a winning ticket for any prize over $10,000.

The winning ticket was purchased at a KC Mart gas station and convenience store in upstate SC outside Simpsonville.

The victor has 180 days - until April 21 - to collect the prize, according to Mega Millions' rules.

One extremely lucky person overcame 302.5 million to one odds last month to win Mega Millions' record $1.5 billion jackpot.

"Eight were in California, four each in Florida and NY, two each in Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey and Virginia, and one each in Arizona, the District of Columbia, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin", according to the Mega Millions website.

SC doesn't require lottery winners to identify themselves.

It's been almost three weeks since that drawing and lottery officials said the victor (s) have not yet come forward.

If the victor never claims the prize, all the money will go back to each state that participates in the Mega Millions lottery.

Lottery officials have already publicly urged the victor to sign the back of the ticket, put it in a safe location and seek financial or legal advice from a trusted source. Winning numbers will be drawn every Tuesday and Friday night at 11 ET until another winning ticket has been sold.
