Chiefs-Rams game in Mexico City in jeopardy over field conditions

"If Monday night's game is played in Mexico City, a number of Rams and Chiefs players are now strongly considering not playing in that game on that messy surface, per sources".

In a statement, the National Football League said the playing surface at Estadio Azteca "does not meet National Football League standards for playability and consistency and will not meet those standards by next Monday". 'Until very recently, we had no major concerns.

The game will now be played at the Rams' home, Los Angeles Coliseum.

"As a result, we have determined that moving the game is the right decision, and one that we needed to announce now in order to allow our teams and fans to make alternate arrangement".

According to CBS Sports, the field was badly damaged during a large concert on November 7 hosted by the Mexican television network Telehit.

It's not often that the NFL's global games end up being marquee matchups, but in this case, Mexico City was set to host two of the league's elite in a crucial cross-conference game.

All NFL teams that forgo a home game to play internationally are required by the league to keep their home stadium available as a contingency.

Azteca hosted the first regular-season game ever held outside the U.S.in 2005 when Arizona beat San Francisco. Sherman also said that all wagers made for the game being played in Mexico City would be refunded, as the SuperBook states games must be played at the "designated city/geographic area within 8 days of scheduled date".
