Celebrity homes destroyed in Southern California wildfire

The death toll from wildfires raging in California rose to 31 after six more people were found killed in what is poised to become the deadliest wildfire in state history.

Emergency teams have been sifting through the remains of more than 6,700 homes and businesses burned down in the town of Paradise. Osby noted that a November 1993 wildfire in Malibu destroyed more than 270 homes and said he would not be surprised if the total from the current fire would be higher.

The Scottish star, well-known for his roles in the movies London Has Fallen and 300, has tweeted a photo of the burnt out shell of his Malibu home.

Tens of thousands of people fled the Camp Fire, some clutching babies and pets as they abandoned vehicles and evacuated on foot.

More than 8,000 firefighters in all battled three large wildfires burning across almost 400 square miles (1,040 square kilometres) in Northern and Southern California, with out-of-state crews continuing to arrive and gusty, blowtorch winds starting up again.

The two severely burned bodies were discovered in a driveway in celebrity-studded Malibu, where residents forced from their homes included Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian West and Martin Sheen.

"As you will see in the images, the wildfires are extensive and spreading through the area", DigitalGlobe representatives said in a statement.

Firefighters said their goal on Sunday was to continue mopping up the fire and reducing hazards in the towns of Magalia and Paradise.

About 228 people are still unaccounted for, Honea said, while another 137 people have been located after friends or relatives reported being unable to contact them.

Firefighters used a respite from strong winds on Saturday to drop fire retardants to strengthen fire lines.
