A man was shot by police after setting his auto on fire and stabbing three people and killing one in the city's central business district.

A Reuters witness said that the city centre was closed off by police and that dozens of officers were on patrol.

The suspect is then shot by police and falls to the ground.

While Suki Singh told SBS News he saw a "massive fire" with "police everywhere" near the corner of Bourke and Swanston Streets. They get out of the vehicle and the man lunges at them, swinging a knife.

The other two are into the hospital including one suffering from a neck injury and is suspected to be in critical condition.

The officers were seen trying for at least a minute to detain the man peaceably as his attacks on them continued, before one office shot him with a weapon.

The attacker reportedly torched his auto before the vehicle burst into flames.

Authorities are praising members of the public who helped police take down a man who launched a deadly terror attack in Melbourne.

Police shot the man in the chest after he charged at them with the knife.

A small number of people have been treated for stab wounds.

Police want to hear from people who witnessed the event or captured footage as they piece together what happened.

A Victoria Police spokesman confirmed one person had died and three people in total had been stabbed this afternoon.

The Victoria Police took to Twitter to update on the situation.

Horror footage shows a auto on fire.

The deceased terrorist reportedly drove a vehicle into pedestrians outside a local mall, the auto later burst into flames "exploding" and several people were stabbed by the unidentified male, who is known to authorities and has links with known terror plotters according to the Herald Sun. "This is Victoria Police, please evacuate the area".

"They were around him trying to take the knife out of his hand - I'm pretty sure it was a kitchen knife", he said.

He stabbed three people before being confronted by armed officers who eventually shot him in the chest.

The incident has occurred in exactly the same street where the accused Bourke street driver, 28 year old James Gargasoulas, allegedly drove down pedestrians in a drug-induced psychosis during the lunchtime rush on January 20, 2017.
